This is despite the opportunity afforded to mobile network operators to undertake urgent corrective measures.
The NTC commits to take decisive action in enforcing compliance with quality-of-service standards and will conduct bi-weekly re-testing in the affected areas to verify the implementation of necessary network improvements while continuing to monitor other areas to assess the quality and availability of mobile broadband services.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) flagged Globe in Manila, Makati, and Quezon City; DITO in San Juan, Pasay, and Las Piñas; and Smart in Parañaque, Manila, and Pasig.
The measure? The NTC issued show‑cause orders to three mobile operators, imposing a PHP 100,000 daily penalty from Sept. 25 until they resolve the service deficiencies.
To recap, the NTC enforces telco standards with penalties. Its benchmarks require 50Mbps up/down, latency <30ms, packet loss <1%, jitter <20ms, and uptime above 99%.
Globe, through GMA News, expressed concern over the NTC's statement, noting that the latest DICT report showed improvements in their services. The company also highlighted its use of advanced technologies, including satellite connectivity, to reach even Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).
