Qualcomm disputes Samsung report on Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 heat
A Korean media report published yesterday claimed that Samsung is considering using only its own Exynos processors in the Galaxy S27 Ultra next year.
The report said the company’s internal testing found that Qualcomm’s newly released Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 runs hot enough to cause thermal throttling, while the Exynos 2700 performed without such problems.
After the claim spread online, Qualcomm’s chief marketing officer responded in a post on X, calling the reports inaccurate. He said:
Recent reporting about thermal issues related to Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is inaccurate. We are proud of the innovation and strong momentum behind our next-generation flagship platform and continue to work closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.
He added that the chip has no systemic thermal problems. He also suggested that findings attributed to Samsung’s internal tests may be unreliable or misleading, since device makers tune their platforms to balance performance and power consumption for different use cases.
No devices powered by the new Qualcomm chip have been independently tested yet, so the claims on both sides cannot be verified. Still, past experience makes elevated temperatures in the new chip plausible.
Modern mobile processors have grown powerful enough to handle PC-class games in theory. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series features two Prime cores running at 5.0 GHz and six Performance cores at 4.0 GHz, which is a heavy load for a device that relies on passive cooling.
Since the debut of the first Snapdragon 8 Elite, stress tests on current flagship phones have shown a notable drop in sustained performance. This does not mean the devices overheat during everyday use, but it suggests that mobile chipsets are approaching the limits of what their thermal designs can handle.
