Toshiba 65U970 Review - The 65 Inch 4K UHD Android Smart TV Beast
Toshiba 65U970 review! |
On top of that, it highlights Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system that transformed it into a Smart TV. Just like mobile phones, TVs are also going beyond just performing the main task it was built for.
This Android TV can also be used as a a gaming device, an educational tool, a component that plays music and much more. In addition, this Android TV can recognize 88 different languages in a push of a button.
Quite intriguing right? Here's our review!

The Toshiba 65U970 is well constructed and feels quite solid and premium overall. It has metal frames, all glass front, and sturdy plastic behind. My only concern is its stand. It isn't that stable. They should have made it more stable.

When it comes to design, the Toshiba 65U970 is a very slim type of TV. It also sports a minimalist look w/ tiny top, bottom, and side bezels. The screen is almost bezel-less for that more immersive viewing experience. It can easily fit most room design types as well.
Audio Quality
Speaker audio quality from the Toshiba 65U970 is unexpectedly nice and immersive for the price. It has the ability to provide rich tones w/ very deep and tight bass response. Crawling type of sub-bass is present even if there's no mention of a sub-woofer inside.Audio is a key highlight of this TV. It's unexpectedly loud and clear enough to stand on its own!
Vocals are also quite clean, though the bass could be overpowering at times. It can also go very very loud. But, it has distortion if you crank the volume over at 50 percent.
Performance
Android gaming is possible! |
Picture quality of this TV is great. It has 65 inch 4K UHD IPS 3840 x 2160 pixels that's sharp and immersive. Toshiba even paired it w/ CEVO 4K engine, wide color gamut, AMR+ 400, MPEG noise reduction, and auto view to enhance the overall viewing experience.
Picture quality is close to life like!
For us, colors are well saturated and punchy. Blacks are also very deep as expected. It's not the best in the world, but for the price, it can decently compete w/ some higher-end TVs in terms of picture quality for us.
However, it isn't the brightest around. It is bright enough, but sunlight legibility is far from the best. We would need to close the windows in our room to prevent sunlight from entering our room and enjoy its great picture quality.
Opening apps like Facebook and YouTube is seamless!
Inside, it is powered by an unknown 64 bit quad core processor. Interestingly, it is coupled w/ Mali T860 graphics that's commonly found on octa core MediaTek chips. It's also has 2 GB RAM for your casual Android multitasking.
The processor that Toshiba used is good enough to run most of the basic and some of the heavy Android apps and functions. Facebook, other social media apps, and YouTube works perfectly fine. Playing your favorite music and high resolution movies on via USB flash drives are effortless as well.
In our gaming tests, we were able to run Fight Night Round 3 using a PSP emulator at 30 frames per second. Asphalt 8 has slight lag on all high settings. NBA 2K17 is only playable on ultra low settings. But, sometimes, NBA still crashes.
It also has single and multi player modes to play online and offline games with the use of a specific controller.
Software-wise, the TV boots w/ Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS out of the box. It has a clean and easy to use interface that can be easily controlled using the regular TV remote and the Android remote.
The Android remote it is using is a special one. It understands up to 88 different languages in a push of a button. Just say what you want to open apps, search the web, and access commands.
It works, but it could be inaccurate at times. You may need to repeat your voice commands at times.
Apple iOS devices can be connected to Android TV w/ the use of a downloadable app. Unfortunately, we weren't able to test it as we don't have an iPhone as of this writing.
It has built-in Chromecast as well to stream media from your laptops and other mobile devices.
Lastly, WiFi connectivity is quite stable. Bluetooth also works well.
Cons - Brightness isn't the strongest around, stand isn't that stable, lags when many apps are opened
Verdict
Yes, it has few glaring weaknesses, but again, you have to consider its affordable asking price for the picture and features.
