Xiaomi launches Mi A2, a mid-ranger Android One device

Xiaomi just launched the follow up to the successful Mi A1 Android Go device, the Mi  A2. It debuted during a launch event in Madrid with great design and cameras.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a sleek aluminum unibody design that has an arc at the back. The discreet placement of the antenna lines helps maintain a muted and minimal design. Xiaomi boasts that they wanted to make the Mi A2 both beautiful and durable.

The screen is a 5.99-inch FHD+ 2160 x 1080 LTPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 403 ppi pixel density. The 2.5D curved glass is protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass technology.

It will be housing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor clocked in at 2.2GHz. It is paired Adreno 512 GPU, either 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 64GB/128GB of expandable storage and a 3,010mAh non-removable battery.

The cameras are pretty impressive on paper. It has a dual rear camera setup with a 12MP f/1.75 Sony IMX486 1.25 µm pixel sensor + 20MP f/1.75 Sony IMX376 2.0µm 4-in-1 Super Pixel sensor. It has AI assistance for portrait mode, lowlight conditions and more.

The AI selfie camera will also feature a 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor with 4-in-1 Super Pixel, AI portrait selfie, semantic segmentation for better edge detection, AI Bokeh, HDR and 4500K selfie light.

It will have a fingerprint scanner as a security feature as well. In terms of connectivity, it will feature a USB Type-C, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and BDS. The Mi A2 will be running Android One 8.1 Oreo out of the box with promises of constant updates until the release of Android P.

The Xiaomi Mi A2's launch price was marked at EUR 249 for the 4GB/32GB variant, EUR 279 for 4GB/64GB and EUR 349 for the 6GB/128GB variant. Local pricing and availability are yet to be announced so stay tuned.
