Unboxing/Accessories

The Flip 4 arrived with an easy to open box with print of the most details you will need if you want to know more about your newly purchased speaker right off the bat.

Inside, it has the speaker itself. You will also find a shoestring-like strap, colored USB Type-A to micro USB charging cable, and the paper documents. It even has 3 months of FREE Google Play Music coupon.

It has no USB wall charger included inside though. According to JBL's website. You can use you iPhone's stock 1A charger to charger the Flip 4.

The problem is, what if you only have one wall charger and want to charge your phone and your speaker at the same time.

Build Quality/Design

Rubberized body
Rubberized body

The Flip 4 is made out of a fabric material and rubber housing. It is designed to survive several hard drops. I also like that it has
IPX7 water resistance. It can survive immersion in up to 1 meter of water.

It may still get some scratches and dents when dropped hard, but I personally do not think that it will easily break. The rubber edges is a bit sharp though. Overall, it feels really durable and well constructed.

Design-wise, it looks modern and kinda round. It is one of the better looking speakers out there. I also like that it has a JBL logo in the middle.

Sturdy build with water resistance!

It is quite portable as well. Its size is far from big. But, it is not as small as some pocketable speakers. It can easily fit inside by small bag. It is not as bulky and heavy as the JBL Charge 3 too.

On one side, you will see the carabiner slot, power button, 5-level of LED indicator, Connect+ button, and the ports. On the other side, you will find the Bluetooth key, volume down/up, and pause/play button.

Features

Feature-rich speaker!
Feature-rich speaker!

The Flip 4 has Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless connectivity. To connect your device to the speaker. All you need to do is press and hold the power button for around 1 second then press the Bluetooth key.

You can also connect two devices to the speaker. Just press the Bluetooth button again and connect to the Flip 4. With that, two users can take turns playing the music they like.

Moreover, you can connect the Flip 4 to other JBL speakers with Connect+ tech. You can also download their JBL Connect app at Google Play or Apple App store.

According to JBL, you can connect over 100 speakers all at the same time. However, Connect+ won't work with older JBL speakers.

In a press of a button, you may also access Google Assistant or Siri.

If you are not into wireless connection, you may still use a cable. The Flip 4 has a 3.5 mm female audio jack slot.

It has no microSD card slot though. It has no FM Radio too.

Battery Life

The Flip 4 has 3,000mAh of battery. JBL stated that it has up to 12 hours of battery life. That is true if you will not crank the volume all the way up to 100 percent. For around 50 percent volume, it lasted for around 8 hours in my test.

It can last for almost half a day on a single charge!

Charging time is a bit slow though. It will take you 3 hours and 30 minutes to fully charge the speaker with a proprietary 5V/1A charger.

Sound Quality

Stereo audio!
Stereo audio!

The JBL Flip 4 has 2x 40 mm driver units with 2x 8W stereo output. It also has a two external passive radiators on each side for better bass quality.

The result? The audio quality of the Flip 4 is superb! this speaker sounds just right for the asking price.

The sound signature is warm. It has a lot of bass which can go deep. The sub-bass response is also quite great. The bass is not overpowering too.

It has crisp details and good clarity level. I also like that it has well-separated details and instruments. High is nice and clear too. Soundstage is wider than expected.

From my memory, it is louder than nearly everything I tried for the price and the size!

But, it has noticeable distortion on max volume.

Cranking it to around 80 percent is the optimal volume level for me.

Audio quality is a bit better on wired mode.

Pros - Rugged design, water resistance, long battery life, loud and great audio quality
Cons - No microSD card slot, noticeable distortion on max volume, slow charging time

Verdict

The JBL Flip 4 nearly did everything right. The build is durable and waterproof, sound is loud/great, and battery life is decent. It is also quite portable.

Based on its design and sound sound for the size, it is one of the best for the price.
