Samsung will be the first to use Smart's Wifi Calling

VoWiFi will be initially released to select subscribers by October once Samsung start to release their latest OTA firmware update.

Samsung devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy S9/S9+, Note8, and Note9 will be able to make WiFi calls when connected to a Smart or PLDT Home WiFi connection.

VoWifi will allow users to call via their device's default Dialer App without any third party apps needed. This will provide an improved calling and messaging experience as well as extend network coverage since being in an area with WiFi connection improves your ability receive and make calls and messages.

WiFi calling will soon be available to other select Samsung devices as well.

In addition to constantly innovating to be able to deliver more services to our customers, we are also happy to be working hand-in-hand with device manufacturers like Samsung in bringing technologies like VoWifi closer to our subscribers, said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT-Smart senior vice president for Network Planning and Engineering.

At Samsung, we aim to inspire the world with our innovative technologies, products, and design that enrich people’s lives by creating a new future, said Jerry Mañus, Samsung Philippines business unit head for IT and Mobile. We are excited as we take part in this new endeavor to shape the future of communication in the Philippines, Mañus added.

The first successful VoWiFi call was made earlier this month when Smart partnered with Samsung and Huawei.

They made a call over a live network in Cebu.
