Huawei Mate 20 vs Samsung Galaxy Note9 Specs, Benchmarks, and Features Comparison
Mate 20 and Note9 |
Could it be a good alternative despite its more affordable price tag.
Quick analysis
Despite its more affordable price tag, it seems like the Huawei Mate 20 can compete or even beat the Samsung Galaxy Note9 in some aspects.Build Quality/Design
Great design for both |
Both are equipped with premium metal and glass sandwich construction. The build of both device are quite nice. Though I will give it to Note9 due to its better IP68 water and dust resistance rating over the IP53 of the Mate 20. It also has Gorilla Glass while the Mate 20 has an unspecified glass protection.
In terms of design, it is debatable. Some may like the curved and the slimmer look of the Mate 20. It also has the bigger display, but it has a notch. Some may choose the slightly smaller screen of the Note9 without a notch.
The Mate measures at 158.2 x 77.2 x 8.3 mm while the Note measures at 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8 mm. It means that the Mate has a better screen-to-body ratio over the Note. The Note9 is heftier at 201 grams versus the 188 grams of the Mate.
Both are prone to fingerprint smudges. The Mate 10 has two color options with textured glass design for less smudges though.
Display
The screen of the Mate 20 is bigger at 6.5 and it has a the higher 88.08 percent of screen-to-body ratio. However, the Note9 has the more impressive 6.4-inch AMOLED display with WQHD+ 2960 x 1440 resolution at 514 ppi. This means that the screen of the Note9 is sharper with better colors.Specs
Massive difference in scores |
Interestingly, the Mate 20 sports the more powerful and new generation 7nm 2.6GHz 64-bit Kirin 980 octa-core processor w/ Dual-NPU versus the 10nm 2.8GHz 64-bit Exynos 9810 octa-core processor of the Note9.
Geekbench scores |
The Mali-G76 MP10 w/ GPU Turbo 2.0 tech graphics of the Mate 20 is also better than the Mali-G72 MP18 of the Note9.
Both has a 6GB RAM/128GB ROM variant. But, only the Note9 has 8GB RAM/512GB ROM model between the two. From Huawei, only the Porsche Design Mate 20 RS has the same amount of RAM and ROM.
Mate 20 and Note9 battery scores |
Battery size is equal at 4,000mAh. Though on our battery test, the Mate 20 lasted for 16 hours while the Note9 lasted for 11 hours and 21 mins. It is due to the new gen and more power efficient chip plus the lower resolution screen of the Note9.
The Mate 20 has the 22.5W SuperCharger while the Note9 has a adaptive fast charging and wireless charging.
Camera
The Note9 has one of the best cameras in the world. It has a 12MP (f/1.5/f/2.4) + 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens w/ Dual Pixel, Dual OIS, multi-frame, and dual tone LED flash. On the other hand, we think that the triple Leica lens setup of the Mate 20 can go toe-to-toe with it. It has a 12MP f/1.8 RGB sensor + 16MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle + 8MP f/2.4 OIS telephoto sensor w/ 4D predictive focus, AIS, 5x zoom, 4K video recording, 960 fps slow motion, and dual-tone LED flash.
For selfies, the Mate 20 has the bigger 24MP f/2.0 w/ AI face beauty and 3D portrait lighting while the Note9 has the smaller
Both should be good for shooting videos up to 4K as well. The Note9 has up to 60 fps on 4K.
Note: Watch out for our actual camera comparison soon!
The rest of the features
The Mate 20 will be ahead in terms of WiFi and 4G LTE connectivity. It also has a dual-band GPS. The 3D face unlock of Huawei should be better as well. Lastly, it runs with the new Android 9.0 Pie OS.But, the Note9 has an S Pen for enhanced productivity. It also has the better UHQ 32-bit/DSD audio support and the HR sensor. It even has the VERY IMPORTANT 3.5 mm headphone jack slot.
Both has a stereo speaker setup.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 advantages - Nicer water and dust resistance, better and sharper screen, larger max RAM/ROM options, HR sensor, S Pen, and UHD audio
Our thoughts
It is a good match despite the huge difference in price. The Note9 is ahead in the water resistance, screen quality, audio, and the S Pen. But, the Mate 20 has the newer gen processor and the more versatile triple Leica camera setup for less.Do you agree with us? Who are you picking?
