Triple-cam with variable aperture
The OPPO R17 Pro is one of the few with a variable aperture camera that intelligently switches from f/1.5 for low light shots and f/2.4 for daylight images. It has a 12MP (f/1.5/f/2.4) primary shooter which reminds us of the Galaxy Note9 by Samsung. The secondary sensor is a 20MP f/2.6 sensor (most likely for telephoto 2x zoom) and the 3rd lens is a 3D TOF (Time of Flight) depth camera.
OPPO is highlighting that it is one of the best camera phones for low light photography. It has the AI Ultra-clear Engine for stunning handheld "Ultra Night Mode" shots with 3s exposure.
Note: TOF lens will allow users to take 3D photos which you can even view on your TV. This feature is not yet available though. OPPO said that they will seed an update to make it work.
25MP AI selfie camera |
For selfies, it has the 25MP f/2.0 shooter with OPPO's AI Beauty Recognition technology, bokeh mode, and screen flash.
Anyway, without further ado, let's take a look at the first few shots we took with the new R17 Pro.

Mini Note9 Comparison
Quick thoughts
The level of detail, color accuracy, and contrast is definitely flagship grade. I was even surprised that it can focus closely and give natural looking bokeh quickly. Even on point and shoot, low light images has plenty of details, good colors, and less noise.
We also noticed that OPPO improved the selfie performance of the R17 Pro compared with other OPPO devices. The face beauty is now less aggressive than ever. I even had selfies where it showed the true color of my skin without making my skin look that blurred.
Going back to the main camera, the Ultra Night Mode is crazy good. It reminds me of the P20's handheld long exposure feature. It can produce brighter images in low light with sharp details and good colors. It can somehow compete with P20's night mode to my eyes.
Then since it has similar 12MP (f/1.5/f/2.4) variable primary shooter coming from the Galaxy Note9, we compared some of their shots. I was surprised that it was able hold its ground in daylight against the mighty Note9. They have comparable colors and overall quality in daylight.
The Galaxy Note9 flexed its muscles harder in some of our indoor shots where it produced shots with better quality.
The output is comparable in low light again. It showed that the R17 Pro can somehow compete with a higher-end device.
That's it for now! Again, we will reserve our final judgement in our full review.
But, so far, this is a capable premium camera phone.
