OPPO defeated Chery Mobile in PH smartphone market in Q3 2018

Chinese tech leader OPPO was able to snatch the top spot in the local smartphone market, beating homegrown Cherry Mobile, in the third quarter of this year.

Market analyst firm Canalys said in its report OPPO secured 20 percent market share in the period, while Cherry Mobile got 19.3 percent. Vivo, on the other hand, emerged in the third spot with 12.5 percent market share. 

Smartphone market in Southeast Asia in Q3 2018

Research Analyst Jin Shengtao said OPPO had been showing strong performance in the region, particularly in the Philippines. It also did well in other major markets in Southeast Asia region, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. 

Meanwhile, Canalys also said smartphone shipments to Southeast Asia fell 3 percent in the third quarter as the region faced challenges brought by the China-US trade war. 

It noted three major markets in the region recorded lower shipment volume during the July-September period.

Its data showed Vietnam and Thailand's smartphone markets suffered, posting 17 percent and 20 percent decrease, respectively. The Philippines had also witnessed a drop in shipment volume to 3.1 percent. 

Meanwhile, Malaysia and Indonesia were able to realzie growth in the period, recording 5.3 percent and 13.2 percent increase, respectively. 

Despite the region's weak performance, Canalys Analysts TuanAnh Nguyen expressed optimism Southeast Asia can rebound.

Top vendors last quarter were South Korea's Samsung and OPPO, shipping 5.8 million units and 4.8 million units, respectively.
