The Canon EOS RP is a lower-end camera if compared to EOS R. It is a camera that is both lighter physically and financially. For specs, it has a 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor which is a but of a step down to the EOS R's 30.3MP sensor. It also has the DIGIC 8 image processor and an ISO range of 100-40,000 and can be expanded to 50 - 102,400. It has a continuous shooting speed of 5 fps which is lower than the EOS R that has 8 fps.


It has a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that has 4,779 autofocus points. In comparison, the EOS R has 5,655 points. The EOS RP also has a 0.39-inch 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. Under that, it has a 3-inch 1.04 million-dot Vari-angle touchscreen LCD that supports Touch-and-Drag AF. It also features a single SD UHS-II memory card slot.

For videos, the EOS RP can shoot 4K footage at 25 fps at 120Mb/s and with 8-bit color depth for both internal and external recorder.

The dimensions of the Canon EOS RP is only 132.5 x 85 x 70 mm and only weighs 485 g with battery and card loaded. Other features include, 8.3MP still photo frame grabs from 4K video, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in stereo microphones, 23 custom functions, water and dust resistance, and USB charging.

Price and availability

The Canon EOS RP is priced at USD 1,299 for the body with an extension grip and Canon mount adapter. It also comes in a USD 1,699 bundle that includes a 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens or a USD 2,199 bundle with a 24-105mm f/4L USM lens. The camera is set to be available on February 27, 2019.
