The Linux kernel will be added to Windows 10 Insider preview builds by the end of June. This indicates development of Windows Subsystem for Linux 2. The first kernel version will be version 4.19 which is the latest stable Linux release. The kernel will keep up with each stable release in the future. This is the first time that a Linux Kernel is released inn Windows.

This promises a significantly faster performance than current emulators. It promises faster bootup and more efficient memory usage. Users can interact with it by installing a distribution from the Microsoft Store or side-loading it.

The kernel itself will also be open source. Instruction on how to create your own will be available and Microsoft also promises to contribute changes it makes open source as well. This announcement comes after the launch of Microsoft's new version of its Windows Terminal app.
