Huawei Nova 5T, the latest release from the company's Nova family is a hot issue for obvious reasons.

Meet Nova 5T |
Aside from its "flagship-worthy" specs for the mid-range PHP 18,990 price tag, it is a handset labeled as one of the best in terms of design and camera capabilities.
Why? Read on!
Nova 5T as a shimmering eye candy
|
Premium metal and glass |
First, let’s talk about how stylish this smartphone is with its metal and glass build. The Nova 5T definitely does not feel like a toy and it has that high-end feel. The back is made of curved glass material that gives a hologram of colors.
|
The reflections! |
Although this is available in three stylish colors, we will take a closer look at the lovely hue of Midsummer Purple. The name is quite fitting since whenever you move or tilt the phone, you can see hues of deep purple, lavender, pink and even a hint of orange.
Midsummer Purple is lovely!
Another thing that adds to its sophistication is the logo pattern on the back that is also holographic in nature. The pattern can be visible depending on the angle the phone is being held. There’s just a small metallic logo on the back that is not distracting the beauty of Nova 5T design.
As much as you want not to hide this phone's back design, you should still remember that glass is still glass. It would be better to include a flip case as protection from cracks or breakage.
|
Big display yet handy |
Going to the front part which is the screen, 91.7 percent of a screen-to-body ratio is just amazing. Huawei was able to fit all of the necessary features as the remaining percent in that ratio.
|
Punch-hole |
There is a punch-hole camera for selfie, slim bezels, a sensor on top. Even the LED light notification is cleverly hidden. All of these features were strategically placed so they won’t divert the attention from the display.
|
Great for watching |
As mentioned in the full review this phone’s length is 6.26 inches, it is smaller than an iPhone 8 Plus that has a 5.5-inch display. This results in Nova 5T’s handiness that you can appreciate especially one-hand operations.
|
Top, bottom |
|
Left, right |
You can find a USB-C reversible port at the bottom center of the Nova 5T that enables not only fast charging but also speedier file transfer. There's an absence for a microSD slot but I think that dilemma can be conveniently solved with a USB OTG and cloud storage.
What the Nova 5T Cameras can do?
|
Camera UI in portrait mode |
After appreciating the visuals, we can now take a close look at the camera capabilities of the Huawei Nova 5T. On its rear, it has a 48MP w/ PDAF and CAF, 16MP ultra wide-angle sensor, 2MP 4cm macro and 2MP depth camera for bokeh shots. It is one of the first to have a quad-camera set-up within the mid-range price.
|
Quad-camera system |
Note that this uses the 12MP pixel binning enables the main camera to take crisp images with wider dynamic range and punchier colors. Pixel-binning is a process that sees data from four pixels combined into one (48MP divided to 4 naturally results to 12) to produce high-resolution in photos.
The most versatile cameras for the price!
For selfies, this device uses a powerful 32MP f/2.0 shooter with AI HDR that works well even for against the light shots.

Normal |
|
Ultra-wide |
1. Natural-looking photos outdoors, in normal, wide, and even zoom settings - Even with the sky's murky color, the Nova 5T was able to produce clear shots in both normal and wide-angle setting.
|
Another normal |
|
Another ultra-wide |
Its AI worked well in about 80 percent of our shots as well. It won't oversharpen or oversaturate your shots at times.
|
Neat daylight shot! |
Although it did not capture the small details on far subjects, the zoom function gives adequate clarity. How cool is that?
|
2MP super macro! |
2. Easily brought out the detail of the subject focused - Macro photography can be difficult for beginners but Nova 5T's Super Macro feature can make their life easier. Whenever activated, there's a reminder for the user to position the camera at 4 centimeters for the best result. It really works!
|
Detailed close-ups |
|
Plenty of colors |
3. Great color reproduction in indoor scenes - There's no noticeable loss of colors when Nova 5T was used in capturing the images below. Aside from that, the play between the shadows and light is simply good.
|
Indoor dim normal |
|
Indoor dim wide, no problem |
4. Gives close to realistic blurs in bokeh shots - The bokeh shots are known to give a pleasing effect and Nova 5T performed really well in this area.
|

Aperture mode |
The background was blurred nicely, thanks to the 2MP field depth camera of this smartphone.

Night 1 |
|
Ultra-wide night 1 |
5. Camera photography is more fun at night - Everything looks different at night and in this case, this city is filled with different colors of light. However, there can be challenges like lack of proper exposure, image noise, etc. Even in low light settings, Huawei Nova 5T's performance is astounding.

Ultra-wide night 2 |

Zoom night 1 |
Extra features were also added for the user's enjoyment under the light painting category: traffic trails, light graffiti, silky water, star trails.
|
Light painting mode |
6. Selfies that matter - Thanks to its 32MP f/2.0 front camera, Nova 5T allowed us to enjoy respectable selfies in almost any scenario. We noticed that it has improved details and color accuracy. The AI HDR worked quite as good as advertised against the light shots as well.

Selfie daylight vs selfie daylight with portrait and face beauty |
|
Selfie with face beauty |
|
Low light selfie normal vs low light selfie with screen flash |
There are still times where I'll look a bit too white for selfies, but it isn't as bad as before. Selfie bokeh is decent. Low light selfies are okay in the dark, but a bit soft.
7. Get creative juice flowing using the video mode - Quality-wise, Nova 5T can give you 4K 30fps at most, and it can shoot 4k on both main cam and ultra-wide cam.
Stabilization, color-reproduction, the contrast in detail were remarkable even during the back and forth switch from normal to wide-angle.
Cool effects were added like background blur, AI color, and 960fps, catering to the needs of artistic expressions. You can even do a macro video shoot using the main camera. Exciting, right?
Our thoughts
As for our opinion, the above-mentioned details justified why Huawei Nova 5T is excellent in terms of its physical design and camera set-up for the price.
For us, there's no doubt that this sleek phone is eye candy, both in color and display.
We also love the part that it is one of the most versatile camera phones this price point. It gave a great performance in almost all circumstances.
If you are looking for these two aspects, maybe this is the phone built for you.
