Samsung's first 5G integrated mobile chip

Samsung Exynos 980 is designed to bring 5G connectivity to more mobile devices on a single chip.

The chip is based on an advanced 8-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology that helps reduce power consumption but increases the space efficiency within a device.

According to Samsung, it is a multi-mode 5G chip that supports 2G to 5G networks with a fast gigabit downlink speed in 4G LTE and up to 2.55-gigabits per second (Gbps) in sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) 5G.

Samsung highlights that its modem also supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) to combine 2CC LTE and 5G connectivity with a download link speed of up to 3.55 Gbps.

It also has the new WiFi 6 standard and IEEE 802.11ax for super-fast speeds over WiFi.

For the chip itself, it uses two high-performance Cortex-A77 CPU cores and four efficient Cortex A55 cores. The GPU is a "top-of-the-line" Mali-G76 GPU.

Samsung also said that it has an advanced NPU with up to 2.7 times better performance than previous generation. The NPU adds enhancements to applications such as secure user authentication, content filtering, mixed reality, intelligent camera, and more.

It also has an advanced ISP with up to 108MP camera resolution and supports up to five individual sensors and is able to process three concurrently for richer multi-camera experiences.

It also has an MFC codec to support encoding and decoding of 4K UHD video at 120fps and HDR10+.

According to Samsung, the Exynos 980 is expected to begin mass production by the end of this year.

Most likely, we will see it in premium Samsung mid-rangers next year.
