Could Huawei top Samsung?

Strategy Analytics shared that Samsung is tipped to ship 323 million smartphones in 2019. It is equivalent to 21.3 percent of the market share. It is up from 291 million units and 20.3 percent last year, respectively.

However, the gap between Samsung and Huawei is getting smaller. As a sign of patriotism, Huawei has posted really strong numbers on its home turf China, the largest smartphone market in the world, following the US sanctions due to the ongoing China-US trade war.

Huawei is estimated to ship 251 million units or about 17.7 percent of the global market share this year. It is up from 14.5 percent last year.

The result is the gap between the two tech giants has narrowed from 5.9 percent in 2018 to just 3.6 percent this year.

If the trend will continue, while still a tough mountain to climb, the data showed that Huawei is inching closer to its goal of tying or beating Samsung as the top global phone maker.

Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics noted that Apple is expected to stay at the number 3 position. The US tech company is predicted to ship 193 million units this year or about 13.6 percent of the global market share.
