Even if 2020 starts the 5G transition, 4G LTE networks will remain the main means of connectivity in big parts of the world for years to come. That is why Qualcomm's launch of three modern, 4G LTE smartphone processors makes a lot of sense.

The Snapdragon 720G, 662, and 460 were announced in a launch event in New Delhi, India. These processors share common features such as support for WiFi 6. Qualcomm says that these processors will make its way to the US and other major markets as well.

First off, the Snapdragon 720G is a 2.3GHz octa-core chip and is the most powerful in the trio. It is expected to be geared towards higher-end phones that are technically not flagships. The "G" in the name means it is focused on gaming so it is expected to have 10-bit HDR support and the same anti-cheating features found in Snapdragon 855.

It also has Qualcomm's Hexagon 692 DSP for on-device AI operations, support for 4K video recording, high-speed displays with resolutions up to 2520 x 1080. It also has the X15 LTE modem which gets to up to 800 Mbps.

The Snapdragon 662 is an octa-core chip as well with up to 2.0GHz clock speed. It features the X11 modem that can go as fast as 390 Mbps. It is also touted to support new triple camera configurations as well as storing images via HEIF file format.

Lastly, the Snapdragon 460 uses the same modem and AI engine as the 662. It has new performance cores and GPU architecture that is 50 percent faster than what is found in Snapdragon 450.
