FREE WiFi for All Program for Filipino Internet users
DICT has contracted Converge ICT to establish WiFi infrastructures for a list of areas with the launch of the free public Internet access program, the Free WiFi for All. Through a public auction, DICT engaged all telco players in an aim to provide FREE, open and high-quality internet access to its Filipino users.
This free service is designed to be available in places such as health centers, hospitals, parks, and schools, and others. Converge ICT is said to be the first to accomplish the completion, ahead of other vendors contracted by the said government agency.
DICT assigned 186 sites to Converge ICT including Manila, Pasay City, and Quezon City. Chief Technology Officer of the service provider expressed that they are glad to fulfill the tasks allocated to them. He added,
We are one with the government in providing free high-quality Internet access to Filipinos, and we will use our broad and strong infrastructure to give users seamless Internet experience they deserve.
Public areas included in the DICT mapping so that the free Internet access will be organized in terms of distribution in all municipalities and cities nationwide. According to Internet World States data, the Philippines has a total of 67M users as of June last year. The Internet is said to be necessary for economic, social, and educational growth. Aside from that, Filipinos need it to communicate and transact with the government.
With this in mind, free WiFi will be available in public plazas and parks, public libraries, schools, colleges, and universities; rural health units and government hospitals; train stations, airports, and seaports; and national and local government offices. This free Internet access program makes it beneficial to advance socio-economic agenda that will lead to nation-building.
