World's third-largest mobile phone image sensor company OmniVision has just unveiled the OV64A 64MP image sensor with 1 micron-sized pixels.
OmniVision is the world's third-largest mobile phone image sensor company and has just announced the new OV64A image sensor. The company claims to be the world's first 64MP mobile phone sensor with a 1.0-micron pixel size. This large pixel size enhances the low-light performance of mobile phones and it supports up to 8K at 30 frames per second.
Other features include triple exposure, 4-in-1 HDR, on-chip combo, tone mapping, and high frame rate. All these features work together to eliminate motion artifacts and produce an excellent 64MP signal-to-noise ratio.
Output formats include 64MP at 15 frames per second, 16MP at 60 frames per second, 4K/2K video at 120fps, and 8K at 30 frames per second.
Mass production of the new sensor is expected to begin at the end of the year. OmniVision quotes a forecast by TSR that says that 322 Million image sensors with 50MP or higher will be shipped with smartphones in 2021 and the company wants to have a huge piece of those sales.
