To reduce anonymity and increase accountability

The company first rolled out ID Verification in Japan in 2019 and has used the insights from that market to inform this decision.  It notes that it is continuing to invest in safety and working in partnership with experts. This commitment is part of Match Group's previously announced USD 100 million investment in talent, product, technology, and moderation efforts related to trust and safety in 2021.

According to Tinder, it will consider opinions from experts and inputs from members about the most suitable in each country. In creating this option, their local laws and restrictions will also be taken into consideration.

Initially, the ID verification will be optional, except when it's mandated by law. The company will also ensure that it will be equitable, inclusive, and privacy-friendly for users. Head of Trust and Safety Product at Tinder Rory Kozoll  said,

ID Verification is complex and nuanced, which is why we are taking a test-and-learn approach to the rollout. We know one of the most valuable things Tinder can do to make members feel safe is to give them more confidence that their matches are authentic and more control over who they interact with. And we hope all our members worldwide will see the benefits of interacting with people who have gone through our ID verification process. We look forward to a day when as many people as possible are verified on Tinder.

Aside from that, the online dating company said that the Swipe feature was based on a double opt-in technology. The premise of mutual consent is before a connection is made between two users.

In the past two years, Tinder has released more than 10 Key Safety features. They invested in technology to lessen anonymity and encourages accountability. It helps members stay safe with features like Photo Verification, and Face to Face video chat.
