Canon just announced its first VR capture product with the RF 5.2 f/2.8 Dual Fisheye Lens. It is touted to be able to stereoscopic 3D VR shooting.

This lens confirms that Canon is diving into virtual reality products. The new lens is designed to work on Canon's RF camera systems. It will be a part of the EOS VR System. The EOS VR System will also with a firmware update for the EOS R5 camera that will support the new lens along with the new VR capture features. Canon will also release new software that will convert and process the new VR footage for use with VR devices.

Canon describes the lens as its first interchangeable dual fisheye lens capable of capturing stereoscopic 3D 180-degree VR imagery onto a single image sensor. The company aims to make the complex system of VR production simpler for both pros and newbies. The lens uses Canon's L-series optics designed with an interpupillary distance of 60mm to deliver 3D imagery in VR. it will have an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/16.

Other features include dust and water-resistant sealing as well as flouring coating. It also has a close focusing distance of 7.87-inches and a max magnification 0.03x.

The Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens is set to be available in late December 2021. The Canon EOS VR Software solutions are both set to be available in late December 2021 as well. Local price and availability are yet to be confirmed though.
