Facebook to change the name soon?

Yes. You read that right! Facebook after years of success and building its name and brand is planning to change its name next week to show its focus and commitment to building the metaverse. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about it during the annual Connect conference on October 28. It is meant to signal that Facebook wants to branch out more than social media.

The rebrand may put Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and other products under one parent company. This move is expected as the company already has more than 10,000 employees working on consumer hardware like AR glasses. The company believes that devices like this will be as prominent as smartphones in the future.

The rebrand could also work as a separator between Zuckerberg's futuristic work and the current public ire against Facebook and how it does its business across its social platforms. This move can be compared to Google's 2015 reorganization under a holding company called Alphabet to signal that it is expanding its services beyond being a search engine only. Snapchat rebranded to Snap Inc. back in 2016 to become a "camera company" before unveiling the first Spectacles camera glasses.

Metaverse, as a term, is not yet well known. Originally coined by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson, it describes a virtual world where people escape from a dystopian, stressful, real world. Think like the novel/movie Ready Player One or The Matrix. It is a complicated topic worthy of research.

What do you guys think?
