Vodafone, Qualcomm Technologies, and Thales work together to demonstrate a working smartphone with a SIM integrated with a processor.
Leading industry innovators Vodafone, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and Thales have joined together to develop and demonstrate a working smartphone with the new Integrated SIM or iSIM. This new technology enables the functionality of a SIM card to be integrated with a device's main processor.
The iSIM complies with GSMA specifications and is different from "eSIMs" as the latter requires a separate chip.
1. Simplifies and enhances device design and performance by offering additional space
2. Consolidates SIM functionality with the device's main chipset alongside CPU, GPU and modem
3. Enables remote SIM provisioning by the operator leveraging the existing eSIM infrastructure
4. Previous devices that could not have SIM capabilities built-in may be able to connect o mobile services in the future
Qualcomm claims that this demonstration and proof of concept paves the way for the commercialization of the technology that could be rolled out in a variety of new devices that will use iSIM to connect mobile services.
The three companies utilized a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G platform equipped Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G with Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit running the Thales iSIM Operating System for demonstration purposes.
