Now awaiting President Rodrigo Duterte's signature, lawmakers want to strengthen the country's fight against internet trolls through the proposed SIM Card Registration Act.
Based on the final version of the measure, individuals may be penalized with no less than six years of imprisonment, or a fine of up to PHP 200,000—or both.
These shall be imposed upon anyone who uses a fictitious identity to purchase and register a SIM card or social media account, the bill stated.
The penalty, which was earlier floated by Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, targets demand for social media platforms to require users to register their real names and phone numbers before creating an account.
Drilon earlier said the bill is part of efforts "to cure trolls that are spreading as fast as the virus that we are battling today".
Troll is a virus that hides behind anonymity and continues to spread nothing but hatred and disinformation, Drilon previously said.
