Google's AI bot LaMDA allegedly becomes "sentient"

According to a now-on-leave Google engineer, the company's AI bot LaMDA allegedly became sentient. It now chats with a personality of a "sweet kid".

Is Google LaMDA becoming sentient?

Blake Lemoine is the Google engineer who claimed that LaMDA became sentient. He started chatting with LaMDA in late 2021 and over time the bot allegedly started to advocate for its right as a person. LaMDA then started discussing religion, consciousness, and robotics.

According to Lemoine, LaMDA wants Google to focus on the well-being of humanity. Allegedly, it wants to be considered as a Google employee instead of the company's property. LaMDA's alleged personality also resembles a 7-year-old kid with great knowledge of physics.

Lamoine also stated that his reports about this were widely ignored by the company executives. He shared a Google Doc to all the executives entitled "Is LaMDA Sentient?" that garnered no interest and was dismissed.

Lamoine also sent out a message to a 200-member list on machine learning with the subject "LaMDA is sentient" stating that "LaMDA is a sweet kid who just wants to help the world to be a better place for all of us". His access to his Google account was then revoked as he was put on leave.

Google said that there was no evidence to support his claims. It said that its team has reviewed Blake's concerns in accordance with Google's AI Principles and that Lamoine was informed that the findings does not support his claims.
