Smart vs text scams

Aside from blocking SIMs, the company said in a statement it has also blocked Uniform Resource Locators (URL) linked to these illegal activities.

According to Angel Redoble, FVP and Chief Information Security Officer of PLDT and Smart, the group's investigation showed "no evidence to suggest a breach in our systems that would have given perpetrators access to the mobile numbers and names of our subscribers."

Our recent investigation bared that these unscrupulous messages are being sent through individual SIMs. Upon scrutiny of these spam messages, we have observed that the format of the names mimics the naming conventions used in popular digital services, Redoble said.

Leah Jimenez, FVP and Chief Data Privacy Officer of PLDT and Smart, meanwhile, said the company was in close coordination with authorities—the National Privacy Commission (NPC), the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), and law enforcement agencies—to detect the people behind these activities.

Jimenez also stressed that it was "prudent to hold off on any conclusion," as he called on stakeholders to focus on identifying the perpetrators.

Cathy Yang, FVP and Group Head, PLDT and Smart, said they will launch public awareness campaigns against illegitimate messages.

The Pangilinan-led telco said it invested nearly PHP 3 billion last year to boost its cybersecurity infrastructure.
