Up to 80Gbps for USB4 version 2.0!

USB4 version 2.0 can go up to 80Gbps!

It is using Thunderbolt 4.0

USB4 version 2.0 will still use the Thunderbolt protocol but everything else has been upgraded. The major upgrade is that it has up to 80Gbps operational speeds. It uses existing 40Gbps USB-C passive cables + new 80Gbps USB-C active cables.

In addition, there will be updates for both data and display protocols so that it can properly utilize increased bandwidth. USB data architecture update will now enable USB 3.2 data tunneling so it can go higher than 20Gbps. It is also updated to align with the latest versions of the DisplayPort and PCIe specifications.

It is also backward compatible with USB4 version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3.0.

Updates to the USB4 specification will be released during developer events for USB Developer Days 2022 slated for November. In order to distinguish approved cables and goods, it will also update branding and marketing rules to USB 80 Gbps at that time.
