Govt links more remote areas via BBMP
DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy earlier said these are the islands of Sacol, Pangapuyan, and Tictabon, noting the former has a population of 12,000.
The DICT official also said that the islands have no access to mobile cellular services and experience blackouts during the evenings.
They have to take a PHP 200 "banca (boat)" ride from that island to Zamboanga City in order to attend classes or in order to speak to their relatives abroad. Ito po ay katuparan ng pangako ni President [Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.] na abutin natin ang mga liblib na lugar sa buong bansa, Uy said during a previous briefing.
With the cooperation of Majority Leader Zamboanga City 2nd District Rep. Mannix Dalipe and other local officials, DICT engineers were able to install the BBMP equipment.
Solar and gas-powered generators have also been deployed on the islands.
Uy said about 30 percent of the Filipino population still has no access to internet connectivity. He, however, expressed optimism that the whole country would be connected once Starlink begins its operations.
Mas mapapadali po dahil instead of setting up a building/tower, we just have to bring the satellite dishes there, he said.
