Thankfully, we were able to get our hands on the TECNO Phantom X2 Pro 5G. So, today we are going to unbox it.
|
The Phantom X2 Pro |
To recap, this smartphone belongs to one of the high-end offerings of TECNO, featuring a 6.8-inch FHD+ 120Hz curved AMOLED screen, 3.05GHz 4nm MTK Dimensity 9000, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, 5,160mAh battery with 45W fast charging, 50MP Samsung ISOCELL + 50MP 65mm 2.5x retracting telephoto lens + 13MP ultrawide + LED flash and 32MP f/2.5 selfie camera.
Unboxing/Accessories
|
The box |
The box came differently as compared to previous TECNO smartphones. It appeared in a wide flat squarish box in Black color instead of the usual rectangular box to save space. This time, the brand is flaunting that this is a premium device.
|
Inside the box |
Opening it, you'll find the smartphone unit, charger, USB-C cable, paper documents, and surprisingly, 3.5mm earphones. That's something you don't see nowadays since most brands opted not to include it.
Build Quality/Design
TECNO leveled up in terms of design with the use of a "unibody double-curved" body. In particular, we got the Mars Orange colorway, but there's also the Star Dust Grey.
|
The back view |
The rear cover is made of mostly plastic but it's got a unique texture that is rough to touch almost like a parchment paper feel. Since it has a matte finish, the back cover is resistant to fingerprint smudges as well.
|
Curved AMOLED panel! |
In front, you'll see a 6.8-inch curved AMOLED screen with Full HD+ 1080 x 2400 resolution. P3 color gamut, 120Hz refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate, and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. There's a punch hole notch at the top center which houses the 32MP selfie shooter.
|
The right side |
|
The left side |
Looking at the right side you'll see the usual buttons like the volume rocker and the power key. On the left side, it doesn't have anything except the antenna bands.
|
The top view |
For the top view, you'll see the shiny metal frame, more antenna bands, and a microphone hole.
|
The bottom part |
The bottom area will give you the USB-C slot, SIM card slot, microphone, and speaker grill.
|
The rear cameras |
Moving forward, TECNO gears the Phantom X2 Pro as a camera-centric device. The primary sensors boast 50MP 1/1.3-inch Samsung ISOCELL.
|
The camera pops up a few centimeters |
The secondary camera highlights a 50MP f/1.49 65mm 2.5x retracting telephoto shooter. This means that it has a motorized mechanism that slightly pops out the camera so you can get better zoom shots.
While the third one has 13MP f/2.0 for ultra-wide angle shooting and an LED Flash.
For selfies, it is using a 32MP f/2.5 sensor.

Selfie low-light shot |
As we get our hands on the Phantom X2 Pro, we noticed that it takes decent photos in well-lit environments both indoor and outdoor providing the right color but somewhat less in the dynamic range region. Using the 2.5x optical will retain most of the details thanks to the 65mm retractable camera feature. The 20x digital zoom produced deteriorated image quality but retains the color near the previous shots.
On the ultra-wide mode, it is useful for achieving scenic views at the expense of slightly lesser details and a bit darker output.
The indoor shot is acceptable, it is color accurate but the details and dynamic range aren't as good as we expected.
The phone shined when taking closer shots as you can see in our food samples. Using the portrait mode on the other hand gives blur on the background although sometimes other areas aren't covered.
For low-light scenarios, the Super Night Mode comes into play to improve your shots, you can get finer details and lesser noise produced in most areas. But it is not perfect, if you take a look at the lights on the building you will still glares and noises on that part.
On the selfie side, this takes good photos in bright scenarios with decent details, and colors. For low light scenes, it does capture nearly the color of the scene but you'll still see glares and noises around.

As of the moment
As a high-end smartphone, the TECNO Phantom X2 Pro offers a gorgeous curved screen, powerful and fast internals, big storage, and a battery.
But do we think that they are now ready for the high-end smartphone market? For cameras, hardware-wise it is indeed a high spec that produces okayish shots, but not the flagship-like level we are hoping for.
We feel like TECNO can still refine the picture quality and the overall smartphone experience by providing software updates.
What do you guys think?
