AI's impact in the past year

Citing Collins Dictionary, BBC said in its report that the use of the term quadrupled in 2023.

We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology, said Collins managing director Alex Beecroft.

BBC asked AI chatbot ChatGPT for a comment and here’s what it said: "AI's selection as the word of the year by Collins Dictionary reflects the profound impact of artificial intelligence on our rapidly evolving world, where innovation and transformation are driven by the power of algorithms and data."

These days, many companies have been looking for ways how they can utilize and integrate AI in their operations.

An earlier report by Goldman Sachs revealed that an equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs could be replaced by AI in the future.

In the Philippines, Surigao del Norte Second District Rep. Robert Ace Barbers filed House Bill 7396, or the proposed Artificial Intelligence Development and Regulation Act of the Philippines.

The bill wants to establish the Artificial Intelligence Development Authority or AIDA "which will be responsible for the development and implementation of a national AI strategy."

The strategy will promote research and development in AI, support the growth of related industries, and enhance the skills of Filipinos in the AI industry, the bill said.

Meanwhile, AIDA will be tasked with regulating the development and deployment of AI technologies in the country, it added.

What do you think about this?

  1. AI becoming the word of the year is no surprise! It’s transforming industries, changing jobs, and even leading to new government policies. The Philippines’ plan to create an AI authority sounds like a step in the right direction to balance development and regulation. It’ll be interesting to see how AI shapes the future, especially in workplaces—maybe even creating new roles instead of just replacing jobs. By the way, if AI had to come up with a 5 people group name, what do you think it would suggest?
