The Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute aims to collaboratively develop ground-breaking and industry-standard optical performance in mobile devices. This means they want to raise the bar in technology and user experience.

The institute will continuously promote deep innovation in mobile imaging optical technology, aiming to create an advanced mobile imaging optical system in the current era of mobile photography. The two brands are leveraging each brand's core strengths with a focus on designing ultra-precision optical lenses, ideal computational photography performance, upholding strict lens optical standards, and the application of cutting-edge optoelectronic technology.

Xiaomi and Leica have invested significant resources and assembled a team of over 200 experts which include the following:  Peter Karbe, 4th Generation Leica Lens designer. Zeng Xuezong, Senior VP of Xiaomi Group and President of the Xiaomi Mobile Phone department. Yi Yan, Head of Xiaomi Group's software technical team, and Wang Xuanran, General Manager of Xiaomi Camera Department. All of them will serve in key positions in the new institute.

Currently, three major laboratories are planned to be opened in Beijing. These will focus on Camera Hardware, Imaging, and Objective and Subjective image quality evaluation. The laboratories will cover an area of 2,644 square meters and Xiaomi promises it will be the best and largest.

Whether or not this will yield actual and perceivable results is still up in the air.
