The stretchable screen

A display technology that may reshape the industry?

It is a prototype panel with 12-inch but the catch is that it can expand by up to 18 inches while retaining a high resolution of 100 ppi and with full RGB color.

Although this isn't the first try of LG when it comes to stretchable screens, however, the prototype they unveiled last 2022 can only manage to expand by 20 percent. If you compare it to the latest, that's a big leap of 30 percent.

LG calls its breakthrough "ultimate display technology." These screens have the ability to actually change, twist, and stretch into a variety of shapes, in contrast to existing flexible displays that bend or fold. This offers opportunities for a wide range of creative applications in various industries.

The project is an initiative of South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, initiated in 2020. LG Display is at the forefront of this work and is leading a consortium of 19 research institutes.

The initial target was the ability to expand by 20 percent but the developers have achieved twice using new technologies. Among the materials they utilized is the special silicon substrate material which is usually found in contact lenses and groundbreaking ways to display wiring.

Another factor is durability, the brand claims the prototype can handle up to 10,000 times of stretching. Moreover, the screen uses a micro LED light source that measures at just 40 micrometers. This approach allows the panel to produce consistent image quality even when placed in challenging environments with extreme temperatures or external shocks.

At the show, the firm exhibited a variety of display purposes, including a curved automobile display that can be operated with touch gestures and a wearable display built into firefighters' uniforms for immediate data access.

Finally, the new technology shows thin and lightweight forms that can be attached to curved surfaces like clothes or skin. LG predicts this discovery can be widely used in different industries from fashion, wearables, or mobility industry.
