MediaTek has just launched a new chip designed for premium smartphones, the Dimensity 8400.
MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is now official

A new powerful chip design for upper mid-range and premium smartphones

The new chip boasts an eight-core ARM Cortex-A725 processor with up to 3.25GHz clock speed, the first time the company used an All Big Core CPU design in this category.

According to the company, this has up to 41 percent higher multi-core performance compared to the previous generation 8300 chip. While providing a better performance, MediaTek claimed that it also offers a 44 percent reduction in peak power versus its predecessor.

For graphics, it highlights the ARM Mali G720 GPU offering a 24 percent higher peak performance and 42 percent greater power efficiency than its predecessor. The company explained that this GPU is paired with MediaTek Frame Rate Converter (MFRC), which delivers smoother gameplay, and MediaTek Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT) 3.0, which optimizes game and app performance in real-time.

The AI? It uses a "powerful" NPU 880 to "accelerate" Gen-AI tasks and the new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) that turns traditional AI applications into sophisticated agentic AI applications.

The NPU supports mainstream LLM/SLM/LMMs across the globe so users can enjoy the latest Gen-AI applications such as translation, rewriting, contextual replies, AI recording, and media generation.

The DAE enables developers to create innovative agentic AI applications that anticipate user needs and adapt to their preferences.

Meanwhile, it also has MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP leverages QPD remosaic technology to capture more light, focus faster and more accurately, and produce high-resolution images as well as HDR recording support throughout the entire zoom range for better videos. This has in-sensor zoom support with 100 percent PDAF focus as well.

The new chip also has a 5G-A modem that
3CC-CA and up to 5.17Gbps performance, Network Observation System (NOS) technology for precise 5G/Wi-Fi switching, improving power efficiency and optimizing network connectivity, and WQHD+ up to 144Hz and dual screen support.

MediaTek is redefining premium smartphone experiences with the Dimensity 8400, unleashing creativity with generative and agentic AI applications and taking mobile gaming even further, said Dr. Yenchi Lee, General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Communications Business Unit. Our All Big Core design, which we’ve also integrated into our flagship chips, highlights the impressive performance and efficiency that can go hand-in-hand so consumers don’t have to compromise.

The top chipmaker told us that the first smartphones to be powered by the new Dimensity 8400 will be available by the end of 2024.
