Intentional or not?

Earlier this year, Nokia smartphones were quietly discontinued on HMD's website, signaling an end to product support under HMD.

Meanwhile, in a now-deleted Reddit post, a Nokia community manager reached out on the r/Nokia subreddit, calling for "large-scale mobile manufacturers" to explore potential partnerships via nokia.com/partners.

The abrupt deletion of the post only added to the uncertainty surrounding Nokia's unconventional approach to seeking collaborations.

The move has then fueled speculation about Nokia's next steps in the smartphone industry. While using Reddit for such business discussions is unconventional, the report says the public nature of the post suggests Nokia is at least evaluating a market re-entry.

Up to this date, HMD is shifting focus to its own devices, while Nokia has continued to produce feature phones (bar-type), including revivals of classic models like the 3310.

HMD's licensing agreement with Nokia is said to expire in 2026, which would allow Nokia to pursue new manufacturing partners.

Potential candidates could include previous collaborators like Foxconn or Wingtech, which reportedly handled a significant portion of Nokia's past smartphone production.

If Nokia re-enters the market, its strategy would likely remain centered on affordable, globally available devices, supported by its extensive patent portfolio, particularly in 5G technology.

Under HMD, Nokia smartphones such as the XR21 emphasized sleek design, durability, and sustainability. If this goes positively on the brand's end, a new product could open new doors for Nokia to redefine its smartphone offerings.

Though swiftly deleted, the Reddit post suggests Nokia hasn't abandoned smartphones. Whether this hints at a comeback or was merely a misstep is unclear, but it's a development worth watching.
