Through the satellite of its technology partner Lynk Global, Smart said it successfully transmitted text messages between Catanduanes and Metro Manila. The test likewise showed "light data capabilities," as both parties were able to access Smart's website.

The test was conducted in the remote village of Marambong in Pandan municipality.

The island of Catanduanes in the Bicol region was a fitting site for the satellite test as it has many unserved areas. Smart said industry players face difficulties rolling out their infrastructure on the island due to its challenging topography.

Smart and Lynk will continue to conduct these tests as Lynk's technology matures, more Lynk satellites are deployed, and service availability significantly improves, said Radames Zalameda, head of the Network Strategy and Transformation Office at Smart.

Smart's first vice president, Lloyd Manaloto, also said the group is targeting a commercial launch in 2027.

Once commercially available, Smart's direct-to-device service, enabled by Lynk's fully deployed satellites, will enable us to respond quickly in emergency situations, ensuring affected Filipinos remain connected via satellite despite adverse conditions, Zalameda added.
