DICT eyes Telegram ban in PH amid porn and gambling concerns

In an interview during DZRH's Dos Por Dos program, DICT revealed that the agency is studying the possibility of banning Telegram in the Philippines.

Why Telegram might be banned in the Philippines

Secretary Aguda said that illegal gambling operators allegedly transferred their activities to Telegram, and the platform is being used to spread pornographic materials with links containing sensitive photos and videos.

He added that the agency has encountered difficulties in coordinating with Telegram's management. So, enforcing local regulations on the platform is "challenging."

In other news, DICT and Meta have recently partnered to ensure the protection of children online, address fake content, facilitate faster detection and removal of online sexual content, provide protection against deepfakes, and combat financial scams.
