Samsung's mobile division might experience a quarterly loss for the first time

The culprit? The booming demand for AI-driven memory chips. However,  behind the numbers, its Mobile eXperience (MX) division is facing unprecedented pressure.

Analysts warn the MX (Mobile Experience) division could swing into the red for the first time in its history, with forecasts ranging from a slim profit of KRW 1.9 trillion (around PHP 79 billion) to a loss of KRW 1.5 trillion (around PHP 62.4 billion).

Even during the Galaxy Note7 crisis in 2016, the division managed to stay in the black, making this potential downturn historic.

To counter the squeeze from soaring memory costs, Samsung is reportedly betting on a three‑tier foldable lineup: the Flip8 for the mass market, a mid‑range wide model, and a premium Ultra edition.

Prices, however, are climbing sharply, with the Flip8 at around KRW 1.68 million (around PHP 67,000), the wide model at KRW 2.27 million (around PHP 90,500), and the Ultra at KRW 2.57 million (around PHP 102,500), raising concerns that consumers may resist.

While the broader company eyes annual operating profits of up to KRW 30 trillion (around PHP 1.25 trillion), the smartphone arm risks becoming a weak link.
