We tested the DITO Gaming Modem for over a month to see how it performs in real-world gaming and everyday internet use. Here are our findings. |
| DITO Gaming WiFi |
DITO Gaming WiFi Experience
To recap, the WiFi is designed with gamers in mind, providing them with top-notch speed, reliable ping, and uninterrupted gameplay.
The setup
As soon as you open the box, you'll be greeted with the unit itself, some paperwork, and the DC adaptor.
 |
| DC-In port |
It's pretty much a plug-and-play setup. All you need to do is hook up the DC connector to the WiFi, look for a wall socket, and plug it in.
Afterward, you may want to turn the router upside down or check the box for the WiFi password. In the same location, you'll find the admin password as well, which you will be using later on.
 |
| DITO App and SIM Registration |
You can start getting a phone, a laptop or tablet then look for the DITO Gaming WiFi, hit the default password to get connected.
Once done, you will need to register the modem's DITO SIM card via the DITO app. Just follow the instructions inside the app, fill in your details, and provide a valid ID.
For us, we used our national ID from the eGov app. Afterwards, we received an OTP code, and then in a few minutes, the SIM card was fully registered.
From then on, you'll receive a 15-day unlimited 5G promo, which comes free with the PHP 6,999 you are paying.
Build/Design
 |
| The design |
The DITO Gaming WiFi comes with an oval-shaped yet slightly tall tower design made of polycarbonate plastic. It's sturdy and thick enough to handle our clumsiness when we dropped it accidentally. To which it did not have any scratches at all.
 |
| The front view |
At the front, You'll find the DITO logo, Team Liquid logo, and the 5G and 4G status indicator lights. At the bottom, you'll see the SIM card slot, WiFi password, admin information, IMEI, and serial number.
In terms of design, you'll see Lets Go Liquid in silver print in the left and right portions of the bottom, while behind you'll find the WPS button, Ethernet port, and DC-in port.
Speed and security
The next setup is to change your WiFi password. Now, this is optional, but you may want to protect your device from unwanted freeloaders or, in some cases, digital attackers. Better be safe than sorry.
 |
| DITO Gaming WiFi security and dashboard |
To do this, you'll need to use your device's browser. Just type 192.168.8.1, then enter the admin details and the password provided under the DITO Gaming WiFi.
After entering those, you'll need to change the admin password first. After that, you may want to head to the dashboard settings, change the WiFi password, and then log in with the new credentials on your devices.
Now for the speed test.
We first placed the modem near the windows to get the best signal possible. Apparently, our home is in Santa Mesa, Manila, but we're picking up signals from a tower in Mandaluyong (as per Ookla).
 |
| Speed test at home during daytime |
It makes sense, though, since our place is between the borders of Manila and Mandaluyong.
 |
| Night speeds but from a QC tower |
The speed test show were getting around 80 to 100 Mbps on day time. Then it was faster at night, which allowed us to hit 153 to 161 Mbps with pings recorded at 23 ms.
Outside our home, we visited the Starbucks Stop and Shop branch, which is quite near a Manila tower.
 |
| Outside our home speed test |
In that area, we were able to hit more than 200 Mbps, though the ping doubled to 46 ms in some of our speed tests.
 |
| Game test on Mobile Legends: Bang Bang |
As for gaming, the main highlight of this new modem is that it comes with Network Priority and Gaming Turbo. Gaming Turbo fine-tunes the modem for play, giving gamers a steadier, faster, and more responsive connection.
Affordable packages, good speeds in the metro
In our testing, we got a stable enough experience, ranging from 20 to 25ms ping for our quick brawl mode in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. So far, we didn’t experience any lag or connection drops.
 |
| Ranked Game ping |
Most importantly, we were also getting similar pings on ranked games, allowing us to hit our combos with ease, making them on point when we needed to execute them in tight team fights.
As for downloading, we were able to finish downloading Asphalt 9 Legends, with a size of around 3.5 GB, in the Play Store in around 3 mins.
 |
| Multiple devices connected |
That’s pretty fast if you need to download big files, whether on the go or at home, not to mention that 3 devices were connected to the WiFi at the same time.
Another thing we liked here is that it is capable of sustaining 4K streaming on our 65-inch Hisense TV.
So far, it has not failed us when watching Netflix or YouTube; we have not experienced those annoying slowdowns where you have to wait a couple of minutes before the video plays.
 |
| 4K video support |
And just for further verification, you may also check Ookla's 4K video test in the picture.
Meanwhile, the signal is not perfect; there are areas like Ortigas where we tried it, and we simply got under 10 Mbps.
However, this was the time when undersea cables were hit, affecting nationwide 5G services. Though we checked our mobile in that area too, just to be sure, and we got around 50mbps from another network.
We also wished it could be powered over a USB-C port from a power bank, in case you can’t find a coffee shop with available wall sockets or they’re simply full.
We actually bought a DC to USB-A cable to try this idea. While it was able to power on the device, the WiFi hotspot never showed up on our phones.
Were guessing it could be cable issue where the modem is not receiving enough power to provide the WiFi connectivity. We can't blame our Anker Power Bank either, since it has 65W output.
Meanwhile, we also found no way to check SMS on the DITO dashboard. That means you'll have to take out the SIM card from the modem and slap it into your phone.
Another thing we would like to point out is that the load is limited to the 1,490 promo. We tried using a typical DITO promo from mobile, but they simply did not work, not even the data allocation.
We wish for DITO to add 7-day or 15-day promos too, since we intend to use this for backup purposes.
But if you intend to use this as your main internet, the single promo should not be a problem.
Pros - Gaming-ready speeds, plug-and-play setup, portable and can fit in our backpack, WiFi 6, supports multiple devices
Cons - No USB-C port, can be slow in other areas, no way to check SMS on the dashboard, limited promo
Our thoughts
For us, the DITO Gaming WiFi delivers on its promise.
You get a steady 20 to 25ms ping in ranked games, speeds that top 200 Mbps in the right spot, 4K streaming without a stutter, and a plug-and-play setup that fits in your backpack, all for PHP 6,990 with PHP 250 in Steam credits thrown in.
Just remember that your experience depends on the signal in your area, and the lack of a USB-C port means you’ll still need a wall socket.
Is it worth the money? It can be if you have good signal in your area. The PHP 1,490 per month could also fit in your budget, assuming you are going to get consistent 5G speeds, especially if your place lacks a fiber network.
What do you guys think?
