The Huawei-designed 64-bit Kunpeng 920 chip is manufactured under the 7nm process using ARM architecture. It comes with a 64-core ARMv8-A chip with 2.6GHz clock speed and 8-channel DDR4 memory. The chip also also features PCIe 4, CCIX, and two 100GbE ports.

Huawei's new chip is built for AI workloads that involve processing of large volumes of data utilizing distributed storage.

Based on SPECint benchmarking tests, the new Kunpeng 920 scored more than 930, or almost 25 percent higher than the industry benchmark. while consuming 30 percent less power versus competitors competitors, Huawei claims.

Huawei said that its enhanced performance is due to the optimized prediction algorithms and an increased number of OP units, and an improved memory subsystem architecture.

The new chipset is designed to power data centers. It will also power the company's TaiShan server. Huawei also announced three new TaiShan servers for big data tasks powered by the Kunpeng 920.

Today, with Kunpeng 920, we are entering an era of diversified computing embodied by multiple cores and heterogeneity. Huawei has invested patiently and intensively in computing innovation to continuously make breakthroughs, Huawei says.

Huawei's new chip will make the company less reliant on on other chip makers like Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, and NVIDIA.
