No additional fees for calls, texts under the new law
The Mobile Number Portability Act would remove additional charges for domestic calls and texts, between Smart and Globe, and even with the third telco player.
Ibig sabihin kahit tumawag ka sa Globe, Smart o doon sa third telco, wala na silang sisingilin na interconnection fees sa text at sa tawag, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian told CNN Philippines.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) already lowered interconnection fees to PHP 0.05 per text, and PHP 0.50 per minute for calls.
The law, which was signed last February 8, also allows "qualified users" to keep their numbers even though they decide to change their telco provider.
As mandated by the law, users do not have to worry as keeping old mobile numbers would be free of charge.
Gatchalian noted implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the law must be released within 90 days after its enactment.
The NTC will work with the National Privacy Commission and other government agencies, providing inputs for the IRR.
The country’s privacy watchdog has promised to ensure mobile phone users' data would be protected.
