The Pangilinan-led telco giant inked a partnership with the US-based technology firm yeterday to build a 5G-ready internet portal (IP) transport network using PLDT's existing fiber network. 

Update to raise PLDT's fiber network to the next level

PLDT Chair Manuel V. Pangilinan said the deal was a critical part of the groups's 5G adaption as it would enable them to "raise PLDT's fiber network to the next level."

With this new investment, level of services is expected to rise..., Pangilinan said. 

Industries such as mining, electric, water distribution, including small and medium enterprises will benefit from the enhance fiber service, Chuck Robbins, Cisco chair and chief executive officer said. 

The development may take three years to finish, the Cisco executive said. 

Joachim Horn, PLDT chief technology and information advisor, said this will allow the company to "remove any congestion from our network."

As traffic grows, we will reach limitations... The new network will help us [boost] our capacity, Horn said.

PLDT is continuing its network modernization plan this 2019 as the company set P78.4 billion capital expenditures, another historic spending following the P58 billion set last year.
