Only the Pro models might get ToF

9to5Mac found the possible existence of the new iPad Pro by diving into iOS 14's code. Now, 9to5Mac is claiming that they have found the existence of two of three devices that are identified as 'd5x.' In iOS 13, the iPhone 11 series was identified as 'd4x.' This could confirm that the upcoming two of three smartphones with ToF are the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Time of Flight 3D sensors have been on Android phones for years. The first appearance of the sensor was in the Lenovo Phab2 Pro back in 2016. It wasn't until 2019 with the Huawei P30 Pro did the ToF see mass adoption by the major smartphone manufacturers. These sensors aid in accurate scene depth mapping. This resulted in improved portrait mode and augmented reality applications.

Previously, iPhones used both the main camera and the telephoto camera to gauge the depth of a scene. An addition of a ToF camera could dramatically improve depth gauging.

9to5Mac also found the existence of the iPhone 9 with a single rear camera that is capable of recording video with stereo sound. This alleged iPhone 9 will allegedly have a 4.17-inch display, TouchID, and the Apple A13 Bionic Chip. It will be the successor to the iPhone 8.
