Canalys: Vivo beats Samsung's smartphone market share in India (Q1 2020)

Research firm Canalys just revealed that Vivo has bested Samsung as the second-largest smartphone brand in India for Q1 2020.

Vivo is the second-largest mobile brand in India for Q1 2020

It showed that Vivo continued its strong showing in the region last year as it scored a 50 percent increase in shipments early this year. The Chinese mobile maker shipped 6.7 million smartphones or 19.9 percent of the market share.

Despite its renewed focus on making affordable A and M series phones, Samsung only got 18.9 percent of the market share or 6.3 million units shipped. The South Korean firm dipped by 13.7 percent versus 2019.

According to the research firm, Vivo achieved a high sell-in in Q1 due to planned stockpiles ahead of the postponed Indian Premier League.

To recall, Vivo also had a strong showing in Q4 2019 based on the report of Counterpoint Research.

Xiaomi is still the leader with 30.6 percent of the market share with 10.3 million units shipped. Realme is ahead of OPPO for the number 4 spot with 11.7 percent of the market share and a 200 percent annual growth. OPPO is at number 5 with 10.4 percent of the market share.

Interestingly, Canalys data revealed that the Indian market recorded an 11.5 percent increase in shipments despite the country going into lockdown in the final week of March.

India is a very important battleground for mobile phone makers as it is the second-largest smartphone market in the world just behind China. In 2019, India's population rose to 1.366 billion.
