Huawei Y7a is a trendy phone with a large screen, battery, fast-charging, and powerful cameras under 9K

Huawei is a brand that isn't contented with doing ordinary things. It is the reason why the company recently refreshed its Y Series of budget phones. The first fruit of that initiative is the Huawei Y7a.
Huawei Y7a, 48MP quad-cam for less

To recap, it is a device sporting a premium-looking design, a large high-resolution display, speedy enough chip, ample RAM/storage, fast-charging large battery capacity, and plenty of cameras that young creatives on a tight budget will likely enjoy.

In our review found in this link, we shared that the Y7a is a smartphone that can effortlessly stun any Gen Z who would want to make an upgrade before the holidays.

We also noted that it is easily one of the prettiest for the price and it has a lot to offer despite its low price tag of just PHP 8,990.

Now, we would want to add why we think that it is a good choice for Gen Zs or anyone on a tight budget. Read on.

48MP quad-cam with plenty of modes under PHP 10K?

Camera UI

Yes, that's possible! Huawei loaded the Y7a with an impressive 48MP f/1.8 main shooter with pixel binning technology which combines 4 pixels into 1 for crispier looking images and better low light performance.

In addition, it comes with the AI-assisted Super Night mode function to allow its users to take handheld long exposure low light shots.
Ultra-wide is fun!

Aside from the 48MP main shooter, it is paired with an 8MP f/2.4 120-degree ultra-wide-angle camera for wide shots with minimal distortion, a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera for up to 4cm close-up shots, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth camera for blurring the background of your subject neatly.

This allowed us to take good quality daylight images with crisp details using either the primary camera or the ultra-wide camera.

The main shooter is obviously more detailed than all its other cameras, but the ultra-wide cam is not even if it is just an 8MP shooter.

Using the macro mode performs well and we find it not gimmicky as long as you are in a well-lit situation.

The bokeh or background blur mode works decently considering that this is a budget phone as well.

And in low light, while not perfect and a bit oversharpened, the Night mode helps a lot in taking bright-looking images with plenty of details.

This also takes respectable looking selfies using its 8MP f/2.0 shooter with Portrait mode, Beauty mode, and different filters.

It also takes up to 1080p 60fps videos and up to 480fps Slow-Mo videos at the back and 1080p 30fps selfie videos. AND, the videos it can take are quite decent for the price which could be good enough for content creators with a minimal budget.

Overall, we enjoyed that the Huawei Y7a is a versatile shooter despite its budget price tag. Its set of powerful camera features allows its Gen Z target market to upload creative photos and videos on social media.

It shoots high-quality images in daylight and it has an ultra-wide-angle camera that allows its users to capture more of the fun. Those who like taking close-up images are also in for a treat as this has a macro mode. And of course, if you want that DSLR-like effect on your pocket, it has an Aperture and Portrait mode to achieve that bokeh effect.

It also has AI which intelligently knows the subject that you are capturing. This helps its users take more vibrant-looking food shots and more.

AND, it has a Night mode to let you capture images clearly even in the dark. This is ideal for stunning cityscape shots, detailed images even in the club, and just simply taking OOTDs on the streets even at night.

Lastly, not all affordable phones can take neat Slow-Mo videos that you can flaunt on your Instagram.

Trendy design and all-around great specs for the price

A phone with good cameras, but with weak performance won't give users a completely satisfying experience. Huawei is aware of this and it is the reason why they ensured that the Y7a will be speedy for the price.
Decent speed
Decent speed

Y7a is equipped with the 14nm Kirin 710A octa-core processor with up to 2.0GHz clock speed and Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. This chipset is a power-efficient yet capable chip that runs most of the basic apps with ease. It's a chip that's on the level of Snapdragon 662 and Helio G70 based on benchmarks.

In addition, Huawei paired the handset with an ample 4GB RAM that allowed us to multitask nicely and keep the performance of the device smooth on most occasions. It also has a large 128GB storage for storing a lot of apps, games, and other files as well as an expandable memory slot with microSD in case you need to store more files.

This simply means that the phone is more than fast enough for its users' daily activity.  Having a phone with good speed like this one is ideal for multitaskers and those who are always in the rush to do more.

AND, this phone has a massive 5,000mAh battery capacity which lasted for almost 18 hours using the PC Mark Work 2.0 battery life test and almost two (2) days of usage on a single charge on casual tasks.

Moreover, it has an in-box 22.5W SuperCharge power brick to charge the phone quickly from 0 to 100 percent via USB-C.
3D curved glass-like back
3D curved glass-like back

Not only that, Y7a features a stylish 3D curved glass-like body with a high-gloss finish in Midnight Black, Crush Green, and Blush Gold colorways. Our unit, the Crush Green version has one of the neatest-looking back design with a modern camera hump design.

Huawei was also able to keep its back design clean by putting the fingerprint reader on the right side of the phone.
Wide display
Wide display

In front, it is one of the very few in this price point with a proportion-looking top-center punch-hole setup for the selfie camera.

Also, the 6.67-inch LCD display of this one is one of the better screens for multimedia consumption and more at this price point since it comes with FHD+ 2400 x 1080 resolution.

This display performed well in our Netflix and YouTube binge-watching, taking a look at the images we took, and while using social media apps. It even has an Eye-Comfort mode which lessens the harmful blue light in case you want to use your handset in the dark.

AppGallery, online learning apps, and more!

AppGallery, Petal Search Widget
AppGallery, Petal Search Widget

Seriously, AppGallery is fast growing. It now has a lot of apps that aren't found there just a few months ago. This solidifies its position as the world's 3rd largest app market place in the world.

So, with the help of the AppGallery, we were able to install plenty of apps that we use from social media apps like TikTok, Kumu, WeSing, and more along with streaming apps such as iQIYI, iWant, iflix, Viu, and more. Of course, it has plenty of other apps from different categories such as Games, Business, Cars, Education, Entertainment, Kids, and more.

Aside from the AppGallery, Huawei pre-installed the handset with the Petal Search Widget. As its name suggests, the device is a search tool. But, it is more than just that. You can also use it to search for the apps not found on the AppGallery and help you install it. Plus, if the app or service you needed is not yet available for Huawei devices, it can create an easy web shortcut for it.

You may click here to know more about the AppGallery and Petal Search.

Huawei also has a Quick App function on the AppGallery "Me" tab that could help you create "Quick Apps" for the likes of YouTube, Google Classroom, Drive, and other Google Services. For Gmail, we just used the default email app of Huawei. You can sign-in to your Google account there.

It is not true that you can't use Google services on new Huawei devices such as the Y7a. There are plenty of workarounds.

And because of AppGallery and Petal Search, we were able to easily install plenty of learning apps on the Y7a such as Quipper, Zoom, Google Classroom, Canva, and more.

To download Quipper, just go to Petal Search, Search for Quipper, Install it via APKPure or apkmonk, and enjoy.
We also installed Canva using Petal Search

Meanwhile, Zoom is available at the AppGallery. So, all you need to do is search it from there and install it. The same applies to Canva.

For Google Classroom, simply search it on the Petal Search Widget and it'll create a web shortcut for you. You may also make a Quick App of the Google Classroom.

After studying hard, you may want to play a few games like FreeFire or Mobile Legends as well as share on social media apps like TikTok. All of those apps are available at the AppGallery.

By the way, there's an ongoing Free Fire Everyone Can Win Promo. To check the mechanics, click here.

Quick thoughts

Punch-hole!
Punch-hole!

Like what we mentioned in our review, the Huawei Y7a is one of the must-consider phones at this price point. It simply has the set of features needed to keep up with the lifestyle of Gen Zs, allowing them to be bold, loud, and real.

It has a stylish design, large 6.67-inch 2.5D curved top-center punch-hole screen with FHD+ resolution, reasonably responsive Kirin 710A chipset, ample 4GB RAM, large 128GB expandable storage, and big 5,000mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging.

Huawei Y7a is likely a solid upgrade coming from ultra-budget phones and a sweet choice for those who are getting a new device under PHP 10K for the holidays.

For us, this handset is more than what you pay for.
