realme 16T 5G Unboxing, First Impressions, and Camera Samples - Durable build, long-lasting battery

The realme 16T 5G launch event is coming soon, but before then, let's take a quick look at what the device offers.

To recap, it is a durable mid-range device packed with MIL-STD-810H certifications, triple IP rating, 6.8-inch LCD (IPS) screen with HD+ resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, 6nm Dimensity 6300 octa-core chip, 256GB storage, an 8,000mAh battery, and 50MP main camera.

Before we check its features, let's unbox it first.

Unboxing/Accessories

Inside the box

The phone arrived in a silver-gray box bearing the realme 16T name on the front. Opening it up, you'll find the unit itself with a pre-installed screen protector, a 45W charger, a USB-A to USB-C cable, a SIM injector tool, and the paper documentation.

Build Quality/Design

The box

Once we got hold of the device, it reminded us of its sibling, the realme 16 Pro, with its design being heavily similar.

You get that square camera island; only this time, there are only two sensors: the LED flash and the mirror selfie.

Feels like glass, but tougher

The back is made of a soft-touch polycarbonate plastic panel. Twist it around, and you'll catch a faint glow reminiscent of frosted glass. Touching the back, though, will leave some smudges, but if you happen to have oily fingers, they tend to disappear rather quickly.

This device carries MIL-STD-810H certification along with IP68/69 dust and water resistance.

This means you get some protection against accidental drops, while the build can hold up against daily wear and tear.

Slim for a big 8,000mAh battery phone!

The IP ratings are just as solid, letting you submerge the device underwater with less worry, while also handling splashes and dirt—making it a solid companion for motorcycle rides during light rain.

The display

On the front, you'll find a 6.8-inch Panda Glass-protected LCD screen, sporting an HD+ 1570 x 720 resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling rate, and 1200 nits of peak brightness.

It would have been better if they used a 1080p panel though.

The side view

The left side is left blank, while the right side houses the power button and volume rocker. 

The top and bottom view

Up top, you'll find a microphone hole, while at the bottom, you'll spot the USB-C port, another microphone hole, the SIM port, and a speaker grille.

The cameras

For cameras, it packs a 50MP main sensor paired with a 2MP monochrome sensor and a rounded LED flash.

Upon initial testing, the realme 16T seems to capture usable photos in areas with good lighting. But, a little softer than expected.

We noticed good color accuracy and contrast for indoor shots as well.

Zooming in to 2x still gives you decent image quality, albeit with a slightly darker output. 

We also noticed the focus struggling a bit when zooming, so you'll find yourself tapping the screen more often to keep it locked in.

Indoor normal and portrait shot sample

For indoor Portrait mode shots, we got well-balanced skin tones, with decent detail on both the shirt and face. But the bokeh looks a bit artificial, and the edges aren't as smooth as its higher-end siblings.

Low light shot

In low-light scenarios, this is where the realme 16T's weakness shows up. As you can see, most images appeared grainy and noisy, and we could definitely feel the lack of OIS here.

There were also noticeable glares on the streetlights, which the camera struggled to control.

On the good side, well, it's still usable, though you'll need pretty steady hands to pull it off. It still managed to capture accurate colors and some dynamic range, and the images stayed relatively bright—meaning the sensor can still pull in more light even under such conditions.

Inside, the phone uses a 2.2GHz 6nm Dimensity 6300 octa-core chip with a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, 8GB RAM + 10GB virtual RAM, and 256GB storage.

Another highlight of the device is its MASSIVE 8,000mAh battery. So far, it's proven tough to drain. We unboxed it at under 50 percent juice, and after half a day of use, it was still sitting at 35%. That includes picture-taking while roaming around BGC, some initial benchmarking, and video streaming.

But before we give our final verdict, we will test it further to ensure accurate battery life under typical to heavy usage.

Depending on the price, the realme 16T is shaping up to be a reliable daily driver, backed by its durable construction, massive battery capacity, capable processor, generous storage, and decent camera performance.

It might be a good pick for riders, students, and professionals wanting a dependable backup phone that goes the distance.

However, expect the realme 16T to be affected by the ongoing global memory shortage, likely translating to a notable price increase over last year's model.
