Qualcomm encourages end users to update their devices

Checkpoint research claims that Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) flaw can be exploited by hackers and used to record phone calls, gather data of the user and more. This MSM has been around since the 1990s and have been used in 2G/3G/4G and now 5G devices. Unfortunately, a serious vulnerability that can be hacked remotely by just sending an SMS message has been discovered and affects even current Snapdragon chips with MSM.

Reports claim that nearly 30 percent of smartphones use Snapdragon chipsets and are thus potential targets for the above-mentioned exploit.

Tom's Guide reports that Qualcomm has already provided software fixes for the MSM exploit back in December 2020 and that security patches released after should have further improved the situation. In the same statement, Qualcomm encourages users to keep their devices up to date with the latest security patches and updates.

GSMArena says that it is strange that no Android Security Bulletin has mentioned the bug and the fix. It is speculated that Google will publicly address the exploit thru a fix at its upcoming June security patch.

Did you update your Snapdragon device lately?

What do you guys think?
