MediaTek releases 6nm Kompanio 1380 chip for premium Chromebooks

Taiwanese chip giant MediaTek earlier released a new chip for premium Chromebooks called Kompanio 1380. This is similar to the Kompanio 1300T but without 5G.

A new Kompanio chip for premium Chromebooks

The chip is based on TSMC's 6nm manufacturing process featuring 4x Cortex A76 big cores clocked at 3.0GHz and 4x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz paired with Mali-G57 MC5 GPU.

It also has up to 16GB LPDDRX RAM, up UFS 3.1 and NVMe storage, and up to 120HZ at 1440p. MediaTek said that the new chip can power up to 3x independent displays with two panels up to 4K at 60fps.

Kompanio 1380 also has WiFi 6/6E, Bluetooth 5, PCI-Express Gen 3, and USB 3.2.

Acer Chromebook Spin 513 will be the first to use the new chip of MTK. 

To recap, it is a 15.6-inch FHD IPS screen with anti-glare protection and a touchscreen. The laptop also touts up to 10 hours of battery life, a full keyboard layout with a Numpad, OceanGlass touchpad for precise touch reproduction, and a wide HDR webcam, among others.

According to MediaTek, it is the world's first 
Arm-based premium Chromebook approved by Google.
