HONOR Magic9, Magic 9 Super Edition launched: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, Built-in fans, 50MP ARRI cameras

Apart from the Magic 9 Pro Max, the brand also introduced the vanilla Magic 9 and a Super Edition.

HONOR Magic9 and Magic9 Super Edition unveiled

The Magic9 is a compact, camera-focused phone, while the Super Edition is a larger model built around an 11,000mAh battery and an active cooling fan.

Both phones come in Black, Olive Green, Yellow, and White. The Magic9 is 8.5mm thick and weighs 209g. The Super Edition is thinner than its battery capacity would suggest at 8.1mm, and weighs 227g.

Additionally, these two phones are rated IP68 for submersion, IP69 for high-pressure water jets, and IP69K for hot water jets.

The Magic9 has a 6.37-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1.5K 2664 x 1236, a 120Hz refresh rate, though the panel is not LTPO. It supports 10-bit color, HDR, and Dolby Vision, reaches 2,000 nits of peak global brightness, and dims to 1 nit using 3,840Hz PWM. 

HONOR Magic 9 Super Edition

The Super Edition uses a 6.81-inch LTPS panel at  2788 x 1280 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit color, and HDR. It does not support Dolby Vision, and its peak global brightness is also 2,000 nits.

Both models run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same chipset used in the Magic8. Each offers 12GB to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB to 1TB of storage. 

The built-in fan

For sustained performance, the Super Edition adds a large vapor chamber and an active cooling fan that together can dissipate 12W of heat. The fan spins at 30,000rpm, and its ducted design improves heat dissipation by 30%.

In the battery department, the Magic9 carries an 8,000mAh capacity and supports USB-C 80W wired charging, 27W reverse wired charging, and 50W wireless charging. 

As mentioned above, the Super Edition brings an 11,000mAh cell. It also offers the same charging speeds, plus wireless power sharing. This battery size targets mobile vloggers who need more power for longer recording sessions. It may also fit gamers who don't want to charge up frequently.

Both devices have the same colors

The Magic9 has a 200MP f/1.9 1/1.4-inch sensor with CIPA 7.5 stabilization + 200MP 1/1.56-inch dual-prism periscope telephoto with CIPA 7.5 stabilization + 50MP f/2.0 ultrawide. 

The front camera is a 55MP f/2.0 1/2.74-inch sensor with a 1:1 aspect ratio.

The Super Edition has a 200MP 1/1.55-inch sensor + 50MP f/2.4 3x telephoto + 12MP f/2.4 autofocus ultrawide. 

The front camera is a 50MP f/2.0 sensor with a 90-degree lens. The rear cameras record 4K video at up to 120fps, and the front camera records 4K at up to 60fps.

Both phones were developed with German cinema camera maker Arri and use Honor's H1 imaging chip for noise reduction and other processing. Both are also compatible with the G200 teleconverter lens.

On connectivity, the Magic9 works with the Apple ecosystem. It can pair with an Apple Watch and shows a notification when a nearby iPhone is ringing. A one-tap transfer tool also helps users moving from Apple, Oppo, vivo, or Xiaomi phones set up their device.

The phones run MagicOS 11, according to other launch coverage. Honor also highlights improved AI features through its Yoyo assistant, covering the calendar, recorder, notes, and file management.
