A breakthrough in Xiaomi robotics?

After the company revealed its latest foldable smartphone, Xiaomi unveiled its first-ever bipedal humanoid robot called 'CyberOne.' It joins Xiaomi's Cyber series of robots that was expanded last year with the quadruped 'Cyberdog.'

CyberOne is fitted with advanced arms and legs. It supports bipedal-motion posture balancing and can reach a peak torque of up to 300Nm. It was designed to be able to detect human emotion, advanced vision capabilities and functionality that allows it to create three-dimensional virtual reconstructions of the real world.

"CyberOne's AI and mechanical capabilities are all self-developed by Xiaomi Robotics Lab. We have invested heavily in R&D spanning various areas, including software, hardware, and algorithms innovation," says Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi Group.

The humanoid robot measures 177 cm in height with a 168cm arm span and it weighs 52kg.

When compared to quadruped robots, Xiaomi says that the humanoid robot is more mechanically complex that requires more powerful motors, more degrees of freedom and more complex biped control algorithms. In line with this, the new CyberOne supports 21 degrees of freedom in motion and can achieve a 0.5ms response time for each degree of freedom which allows it to simulate human movements.

Humanoid robots are designed to rely on vision to process their surroundings. Xiaomi equipped the robot with a self-developed Mi-Sense depth vision module that when combined with an AI interaction algorithm allows CyberOne to and perceive 3D space, recognize individuals, gestures and expressions. This means it can not only see but also process its environment.

This effectively allows it to recognize up to 85 types of environmental sound and up to 45 different classifications of human emotions!

Xiaomi says that the development of CyberOne is a symbol of Xiaomi's dedication to incubating a technology ecosystem centred on a single point and connecting it with the world in ways never seen before.

"We think that intelligent robots will definitely be a part of people's lives in the future," said Lei Jun.
