Third telco player sees more subscribers next year

DITO chief technology officer Rodolfo Santiago said that the telco player already has 14 million customers.

Late in August, DITO said its subscriber base already reached 12 million, ahead of its target date.

We want to double that, at least double, DITO chief administrative officer Adel Tamano said in an interview with reporters.

DITO previously attributed the fast subscriber take-up to the group's aggressive network rollout with more than 6,000 cellular towers fired up, allowing it to increase its coverage to over 600 cities and municipalities.

The company, backed by Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecommunications, passed its third performance audit in September.

The NTC, in a document dated September 8, said the third telco player passed the mandated technical review. Based on an independent auditor's report, DITO reached a population coverage of 72.39 percent. Its minimum average broadband speeds, on the other hand, hit 71.77 Mbps and 809.19 Mbps for all 4G and 5G sites, respectively.

Almost three months after the audit, Santiago said DITO now covers 74 percent of the population.
