Intel to make chips for mobile phones again

Intel x ARM!

Under this partnership, ARM's technology can be made in Intel factories. It aims to put Intrl on equal footing with TSMC and Samsung which currently manufacture most of the world's chips for mobile phones.

This is not the first time that PC chip giant Intel will be making mobile device chips. Back in 2015, they released the Intel SoFIA Atom chip. However, they failed to continue developing SoCs to compete with mobile chip giants MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Intel has also long seen its technological manufacturing edge blunted by rivals such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the one that makes chips for Apple and many more.

This strategy will open up Intel's factories to other companies like those who make chipsets for mobile phones. One of those firms is Qualcomm and they plan to use its factories for future chip designs.

There is growing demand for computing power driven by the digitization of everything, but until now ... customers have had limited options for designing around the most advanced mobile technology, Pat Gelsinger, Intel's chief executive, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Japanese firm SoftBank-owned ARM is a major supplier of intellectual property for many chip companies. It has partnerships with major chip contract manufacturers to ensure that its designs will work well in its manufacturing processes.
