5G is fast. But, 6G is the future. In Japan, researchers created the very first 6G wireless device in the world.
According to reports, it was able to transmit data at 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) which means that it is up to 20x faster than the current 5G tech.
The test was successfully conducted by a consortium consisting of DOCOMO, NTT, NEC, and Fujitsu.
The four companies have been jointly conducting R&D on sub-terahertz devices since 2021 in preparation of the upcoming 6G era. They were able to transmit 100 Gbps in the 100 GHz and 300 GHz bands at distances of up to 100 Mbps.
DOCOMO developed the wireless transmission equipment capable of transmitting data rates equivalent to 100 Gbps at a distance of 100 meters at 100GHz.
NTT developed a top-wireless device capable of transmitting 100 Gbps per channel at a distance of 100 meters in the 300 GHz band.
NEC developed a multi-element active phased antenna (APAA) consisting of more than 100 antenna elements.
Fujitsu achieved a high-output and high-efficiency signal amplification to extend the communication range and reduce power consumption in the 100 GHz and 300 GHz band. IT is said to be the world's highest power efficiency in a high-output amplifier.
Note that the 6G era is not coming anytime soon and it is still under developement. It will still take several years before we see this in consumer-level use cases.
According to most studies, 6G expected to be available in the market by 2029.
